This Update, which is number 100, marks another milestone in the life of Children Law and Practice. The book, which was published on the day that the Children Act 1989 came into force on 14 October 1991, has, like the Act itself, endured and developed down the ensuing 33 years to ensure that readers continue to have a detailed, authoritative and up to date account of the law and practice relating to children that is in keeping with the work’s original concept. Despite the passage of so many years, the narrative has benefited from having very few custodians. Until his most untimely death in 2004, David Hershman was the only co-editor, thereafter Madeleine Reardon (from 2005) and Alex Laing (from 2020) have worked with Andrew McFarlane, who has been an editor on each of these 100 updates. Whilst this is a moment to look back, it is not a time for complacency and substantial rearrangement and spring-cleaning is planned for the coming updates.
